At Oakbridge, our history curriculum is designed to ignite curiosity and foster a deep understanding of the past. We introduce the concept of history as the study of past events, people, and places. This helps pupils appreciate how the world has evolved over time. We emphasise that evidence is at the heart of history. Pupils learn about different types of evidence, such as artefacts, documents, oral histories, and visual sources, which help us uncover the past. Pupils discover that history can have different versions because people have diverse opinions and perspectives. This teaches them to appreciate and critically evaluate various viewpoints. We help pupils build a picture of their place in history, understanding that history is divided into periods, often linked to monarchs, empires, or significant events. We explore how symbolism is a recurring theme in history. Pupils explore how symbols represent ideas, beliefs, and events, enhancing their understanding of historical contexts.
Throughout our history topics, we focus on key themes that enable students to make meaningful comparisons and connections, they are:

We place a strong emphasis on learning about our local history, fostering a sense of connection and belonging to the world around us. Our curriculum encourages hands-on learning through the use of sources, artefacts, and observation exercises. This approach reinforces classroom learning and makes history engaging and tangible. Our history curriculum aims to spark curiosity about the past and help pupils understand why our place in history looks the way it does. By building a solid foundation of historical knowledge, we prepare pupils for more advanced studies in Key Stage 3.

How we support children with SEND in History
