Our entire curriculum, including Religious Education, is underpinned by the Parable of the ‘Wise and Foolish Builders’

The Wise and Foolish Builders

In delivering Religious Education (RE) at Oakbridge, our intent is to provide a curriculum that promotes understanding, respect, and tolerance for different faiths, beliefs, and cultures, whilst fostering spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development. The curriculum is engaging, relevant, and inclusive, enabling pupils to explore and question their own beliefs and values, as well as those of others. The intent is to develop pupils’ critical thinking skills, empathy, and awareness of global issues, laying a foundation for them to contribute positively to a diverse society.

Our RE curriculum is well-planned, cohesive, and progressive, ensuring coverage of key religious traditions, ethical questions, and philosophical ideas. It clearly reflects our values and ethos.

In line with the Leeds and York Diocesan Syllabus (September 2022), children study Christianity for 50% of the curriculum, with the other 50% being made up of other world faiths and non-religious world views. At Foundation Stage RE will be delivered flexibly according to the statutory requirements of the EYFS. In Key Stage 1 children will receive, on average, 1 hour of curriculum RE a week with children in Key Stage 2 receiving, on average, 75 minutes.

The curriculum enables the teacher to deliver interactive lessons that encourage participation, reflection, and discussion. We use a range of teaching strategies to enhance our children’s understanding and engagement with RE.

Through our curriculum we encourage respect and inclusion and celebrate religious diversity. We provide opportunities for our children to learn about different faiths and beliefs to foster respect and understanding. It is important that we create a safe and inclusive learning environment where all pupils feel valued and respected.

How we support children with SEND in RE 

In our Religious Education lessons at Oakbridge, we ensure that children with SEND are supported so they can take part meaningfully in every aspect of learning. We use visual resources, clear step-by-step explanations, adapted texts, practical activities, and opportunities for personalised reflection to help all children access the themes and stories explored in RE. These adaptations are important because they make learning inclusive, allow every child to express their own ideas and beliefs, and help them develop respect, curiosity, and understanding of the diverse world around them.
